20-year-old Música Mexicana break-out artist Ivan Cornejo (@ivancornejoo) debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums and Regional Mexican Albums charts with his new album MIRADA (Zaragoza Records / Interscope Records), earning over 34,000 equivalent album units. MIRADA also enters the Billboard 200 at No. 17, Billboard’s Top Album Sales and Top Current Album Sales tallies at No. 9 and the Top Streaming Albums chart at No. 20. Eleven of the album’s 12 tracks are charting on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs tally. Globally, the album amassed over 71 million combined streams in its first week. Listen to MIRADA
MIRADA includes the hits “Baby Please,” which debuted at No. 8 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart earlier this year, “Aquí Te Espero,” “Dónde Estás” and “Intercambio Injusto,” which is spotlighted in the new Apple short film ¡Suerte! Ivan makes his acting debut in the film, which was directed by Cliqua (Pasqual Gutierrez, RJ Sanchez) and features a cameo by Maria Zardoya of The Marias. MIRADA is the follow-up to Dañado, Cornejo’s 2022 sophomore album, which entered the Billboard 200 at No. 28 and spent 37 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Albums chart
Cornejo – who is one of the most consumed Música Mexicana artists in the U.S. with over two billion combined global streams – will support MIRADA with a 26-date headline tour, visiting arenas and amphitheaters across the U.S. Tickets for the run, which launches August 15 at Hertz Arena in Estero, FL, are available
“Mirada is one of Cornejo’s most mature efforts yet, extending his brand of melancholy corridos and mixing them with alt-rock sounds and surprising polyrhythms,” said Rolling Stone in this feature, which takes fans through each of the album’s 12 songs. GRAMMY.com observed,
“On ‘Mirada,’ Ivan Cornejo Redefines The Sound Of Sad Sierreño.” SPIN noted, “the Mexican American star is tapping into the power of his guitar to take the genre into a rock-infused direction.” Billboard hailed the album as “Captivating” while Miami New Times said, “It’s his focus on feelings and vibes that has kept Cornejo at the forefront of an evolving Latin music scene…”
Cornejo’s sophisticated combination of sad sierreño roots and hazy, alternative-rock vibes resonates with young listeners who identify with his bicultural sensibility, quiet demeanor and the need to let the songs speak for themselves. It is no coincidence that his third album is titled MIRADA. This poetic word – Spanish for gaze – underscores the California-born singer/songwriter’s Mexican roots, but also the soulful lyricism that permeates every single one of the session’s 12 tracks.
“I fell in love with that word through the songwriting process for this album,” explains Ivan Cornejo. “It felt soft and gentle. It’s a deep word, and I love how it looks visually. The title track references a gaze from your lover, the kind of look that you may perceive from someone who’s falling out of love with you. A gaze can forever change your life.”
